The Evolution of Township Government
In 1894 the major role of Township Government was fence disputes, livestock replacement, and maintaining the public cemeteries as much as assisting those in need. Our Indiana fore fathers never envisioned the diverse and complex situations that affect townships today. We admire their wisdom in providing our system of local government capable of evolving to meet the needs of the people we serve as well or better than any other form of government. Just as the township is the life-blood of the local social service community, the system’s administration within Wayne Township is vital in similar ways.
System’s Administration is typically considered to be the computer department, but few people realize the scope of its entire operation. The main functions include the daily operating system, disaster recovery, interaction with the public, community agencies and government offices through the Internet and our township web site.
At this time of the year, because of the advanced capabilities of our systems, we are able to easily access and track current and historical data to better formulate our budgets and strategic planning. This is extremely critical because the township trustee must be prepared to meet the emergency needs of our citizens in the coming year, that was brought about by the complex and diverse situations that we are currently experiencing.
Rising unemployment, the loss of manufacturing jobs, and arguably the worst economy since the depression has increased the number of clients we service by forty three percent over the last four years. This translates into a budget increase in the neighborhood of thirty percent for the year 2004.
Our advanced technology helps us keep pace with the ever-increasing needs of our clients and constituents. This allows us to fulfill our dual responsibility as “The guardian of the taxpayer and advocate of the poor.”
