On Sunday, January 26th, the ‘Dreyfus Five’ won the scratch division of the Men’s City Bowling Tournament. Team members are: Jeff Dreyfus, Jeff Shimer (207), Brent Shimer (193) Scott Shimer (220) and Steve Vining (231). The ‘Dreyfus Five’ won the tournament with a total score of 3372. Scott Shimer won high game for the team, a 300-pin perfect game, rolled in the third game of the series. I asked Scott if he had any crossovers, strong or weak hits. He said, “No, every shot was right there”. Brent, Jeff, and Scott Shimer (brothers) were all Elmhurst graduates from the classes of ’86, ’88 and ’96 respectively. Team Captain Jeff Dreyfus is the Elmhurst bowling coach, coaching 12 boys and 8 girls. He was on the PBA tour for 12 years and bowls league at Hillcrest Bowl where he carries a 225 average. Jeff has won many events in the City Tournament as well as winning the ‘All Points Category” in 1989. Scott Shimer, while bowling for Indiana State University, won the National Bowling Championship where he was voted MVP as a freshman in 1997.
Hillcrest Bowl and Pro Bowl West were the hosts for this year’s tournament which was held January 11th through January 26th. There were a total of 296 teams competing.
Bus and Dave Oswalt of F.O.E. #248 – Waynedale won the Actual Doubles with an unweighted score of 1396. Shawn Fox (also an Elmhurst graduate) won the All Events category with a score of 762.
The best Women’s Handicap Team was F.O.E. #248 posting a total score of 3525. JoAnn Riegor, Beverly Wedler, Vickie James, Paula Smith and Lynn Conley all bowled well with Beverly posting the high series of 687 (actual).
The Fort Wayne City Tournament has been going on since 1920. This was the first year that The Waynedale News team participated. Their average game per man with handicap was 210. Averages for the tournament are determined by a person’s previous year average and teams can be made up from any group of individuals.
