TUFWC PROVIDES ONLINE SKILLS TRAINING
TUFWC announces the availability of 800 courses for high quality, self-paced interactive Internet training. The online skills-based courses are grouped into seven libraries of related topics. Each library is priced at $199 per year per person for unlimited access, and contains as many as 200 courses covering topics such as: desktop computing skills, small business management skills, web development, technical Microsoft certifications training, home office skills, and many other topics. All are self-paced and offer increased knowledge and proficiency for professional advancement and personal enrichment. Open house is just around the corner. Plan to attend on Sunday, January 19, 2003 (No football game that day). Times are 2pm to 4pm. You will enjoy the afternoon and learn more about Bishop Luers from our dedicated faculty and staff. You will also meet our students, who will be helping out in many different capacities. This is a perfect time for you, and your family to tour the school, ask questions, and enjoy refreshments. Also, our newly renovated locker rooms will be open to tour. Come on down and see the results of our many generous Bishop Luers’ supporters.
‘KNIGHTS AROUND THE TABLE’ COOKBOOK ON SALE
BLHS families, students, friends, teachers, and alumni have compiled a hard cover cookbook of 500 truly exceptional and unique recipes. Many recipes are from Luers Knight preview parties, specialties from local restaurants and four elegant menus for those special events for every season. “KNIGHTS AROUND THE TABLE” is a must for all cooks – it makes a wonderful gift for any occasion. The cost is only $12 with proceeds supporting the Bishop Luers Minstrels. You can place your orders through the main office at 456-1261. FRESHMAN REGISTRATION AT BLHS
Tuesday, January 28th and Wednesday, January 29th, all eighth grade students; (class of 2007) and their parents are asked to register for the upcoming school year. Faculty and staff will be available to help with decision-making. Also, representatives from our business office will be on hand to discuss tuition and tuition forms will be given out. Registration will take place in the cafeteria. A registration fee will be required at the time of registration. That amount is determined in January and we will notify our feeder schools. Call the Development Office, with any questions or concerns.
BLHS HOSTING CHEERLEADING REGIONAL
BLHS will host its 5th annual National Cheerleading Association Regional on January 11, 2003. The doors open at 7am with registration until 9am. The competition begins at 10am with the varsity squads. The cost is $15 per cheerleader, per team, $10 per best cheerleader, $5 per spectator. Ages 7 and under free. HELP WANTED
The BLHS cafeteria staff is looking for a few subs to fill in once in awhile when someone is sick or needs a day off. This is a paid position. Contact Liz O’Brien at 456-1261, extension 3037.
STUDENTS CAN WIN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS THROUGH PROJECT XL
High school students, and their parents, who are interested in college scholarships and creative arts are encouraged to learn more about Project XL (Excel), a competition that awards over $40,000 in scholarships to creative students who excel in various forms of artistic expression. Project XL is created, funded, and administered by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance. The topic of this year’s competition is “Identity – What Makes You Stand Out?” Students should express themselves through one of six categories: writing, music, two-dimensional art, three-dimensional art, video or performance. Project XL gives students an opportunity to develop skills that will impact their future. Students wanting to learn more about the rules and how to enter the competition should contact the school administrative office. Entries may be submitted from January 20th through the 24th at any local Farm Bureau Insurance office.
UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS
The University of Saint Francis’ Oaks and Willows Center is offering an academic support program for children on Saturdays from January 18 through April 26, 2003. This program is open to all students in the community who need individualized help in reading, math, and written expression for remediation or enrichment. Students work in a small group of their peers with one tutor to enhance their skills. Work within the group is prescriptive. The program provides computer-assisted instruction along with a variety of hands-on materials under the direction of experienced teachers from the community.
Classes meet on Saturday mornings in Bonaventure Hall. Children in grades 1-3 attend class from 8:30am to 10am. Children in grades 4 and up attend class from 10:15am to 11:45am. The cost is $250 per student, $200 for other children in the same family. The fee includes all materials. VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY
LOCAL STUDENT FULFILLS STUDENT TEACHING REQUIREMENT
VU senior Lisa Kendall of Fort Wayne is student teaching for the Fall 2002 semester. Kendall is student teaching at La Porte High School. She is teaching English under supervising teacher Jennifer DeJaegher. A semester of student teaching is required of all teacher education majors at Valparaiso University. Lisa Kendall is majoring in English and secondary education in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is a graduate of Northrop High School and is the daughter of Timon and Miriam Kendall of Fort Wayne.
