THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

The holiday season is upon us once again, which is a reminder for me to slow down and appreciate the many blessings in my life. As I look back over the past year, I think about how wonderful people have been to me, and how great it has been to provide much-needed help to members of our community. When I think of my greatest experiences and successes I’ve had as your trustee, I know it is because of the people who were involved one way or another.

Perhaps my most rewarding moments were meeting the senior citizens at our sign-up events for prescription drug saving cards and helping them get access to affordable, life-saving medications. They were kind enough to share their heartwarming stories with my staff and me, along with their concerns for their future.

Another rewarding experience I’ve had is seeing the benefits of our outreach efforts into the faith-based community. Government and churches are often strangers, even though we can have similar goals – helping people. I contacted over 400 spiritual leaders so I could explain what Wayne Township could do to help their congregations. In meeting with them, I was honored as they imparted their wisdom and perspectives to me. There were many humble moments as I listened to their experience and dedication.

In addition to successful outreach efforts into the faith-based community, Wayne Township has also found many ways to improve communication with the many not-for-profit agencies in town. I am very thankful for their unique combination of warmth and professionalism. Their willingness to partner in a variety of projects shows us all that there is a true feeling of commitment to help those in need. Of course, these projects are only successful because of the great staff I have. The supervisors put a great deal of work into their day-to-day responsibilities, plus come to the table prepared to take on extra projects as they come up. Other employees put forth the highest level of professionalism, even though they undergo high-stress situations on a regular basis.

Finally, I’m grateful for the clients, who have been able to provide suggestions for improving services. They seek assistance under emergency circumstances, yet are generally patient and courteous. They are the reasons we come to work, and they are why we get to experience the wonderful feelings of helping our neighbors every single day. These are the things that I am most truly grateful for.
