A BYTE OF KNOWLEDGE

This is perhaps my favorite byte yet.

Saturday November 2nd Jen and I took a road trip to Indianapolis/Keystone area. It wasn’t 2 weeks ago I received an e-mail from Apple Computer about how to “Shop Different” to my huge excitement it was an invitation to the Grand Opening of the new Apple Store – Keystone. In what I’ve heard about other Apple Store Grand Openings in the country I’ve heard it’s almost a party.

15 Minutes before 10:00am at the Keystone Mall I realize parking was a little scarce, especially when the mall hasn’t even open yet. We walk into the doors of the mall and find a mob of people in a giant line that stretched around the corner of the mall all the way to the end of the hallway. It was at least a football field long! We get in line so far away; we couldn’t even see the Apple Store.

Security was tight, and was basically to keep all of us geeks in line. Literally! The people there were excited, and very friendly. Everyone in line are professionals in whatever the Mac community can do, like Print, Newspaper, Web, Video and Music. We were actually in line with a couple from Waynedale Indiana, who drove just to see what we were there to see. 2 hours away from Fort Wayne inside a mall before it opened and the people right behind us in line were from the same zip code. Freaky!

The Apple Store opened and we still waited in line. The security and the police kept the store as full as the fire marshal could allow.

The front of the store showed an Apple iMac in what looked like a clever snow-globe saying “I’m Dreaming of … for Christmas.” And boy would I!

Inside the store it was sectioned off for the different computers and technologies like: Professional, Children, Audio, Video, Photos. Each area had Macintoshes with the latest software installed and running so anyone could edit video, or photos on a Macintosh. All the computers in the store were connected to the Internet to check e-mail or whatever.

One of the most unique parts of any Apple Store is “The Genius Bar” an area of the store that people could ask any question about anything related to Apple Products. If that person at the Genius Bar doesn’t know the answer to any question, behind them is a red phone dialed directly into Apple Headquarters at Cupertino.

Was it worth the drive, the wait, and the crowds? For a man who doesn’t like going to stores, even computer stores, or mall, I loved my whole experience at The Apple Store Keystone. It’s my one and favorite store. For more info on the Apple Store visit www.apple.com/store.
