AIRMAN SWIFT PART OF “OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM”

by Amy Pomeroy

Airman Kimberly L. Swift, 25, daughter of Patrick Swift of Fort Wayne is forward-deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. “After the attacks on September 11, 2001, I can now see how the Navy’s on top of the problem. We’re showing the enemy how strong we really are and that we’re not to be messed with,” said Swift. “Carriers have the best trained Sailors on board. We’re ready for anything,” said Swift. “The battle group helps the carrier be the best line of defense.”

As the focal point in the battle group, USS George Washington demonstrates forward presence by providing a platform from which to launch air attacks against enemy forces. The carrier can support more than 75 aircraft on its 4.5-acre flight deck and houses approximately 5,000 crewmembers below deck.

As an airman, Swift’s primary responsibility on board the USS George Washington is to assist in flight deck operations. “I drive the aircraft tow tractor and move planes on the flight deck,” said Swift. “I also do maintenance on the tractor, like checking the fluids, belt, and tires.”

Swift enlisted in the Navy in October of 2000. Since then, she has been able to experience many unique opportunities. “My most memorable moment was graduating from recruit training. I pushed myself hard and it got me stationed on the best carrier in the fleet,” said Swift. “My most unique experience was when we pulled into Crete, as it was the first time I had ever been overseas. I’ll never forget it. I’m looking forward to seeing and meeting new people during this deployment.” It’s the job of Sailors like Airman Kimberly L. Swift to defend the legacy of this nation’s founding fathers.

According to the Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Gordon R. England, “The terrorist attacks of 9/11/01 reverberated throughout our nation. In their aftermath, our nation responded with renewed strength and decisiveness. Proudly, the Navy and Marine Corps have honored our lost shipmates and countrymen by performing magnificently during OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.”
