AT THE MOVIES WITH KASEY BUTCHER
Signs, the newest film from Director/Writer, M. Night Shyamalan, is a phenomenal movie. Shyamalan manages to mix fear and comedy together, along with a potent message. This picture is about a man who loses his faith and how he finds it again. It just happens to involve aliens.
It also just happens to be very scary. If you have never been so involved in a film that you find yourself sitting in the middle of a packed theater biting your nails and screaming out-loud, see this movie! Signs is a great movie to see with a group of friends. Each member will see something that they find frightening and something that touches them personally. The more the merrier-the more the scarier. It is also a movie that people can discuss afterward, due to its deep message.
In the movie, Mel Gibson (We Were Soldiers) plays Graham Hess, a former Pennsylvanian minister who loses his faith after the death of his wife. He wakes up one morning to find that a giant crop circle has been created in his corn field. The crop circle, which his son, Morgan (Rory Culkin, The Good Son), first says is a sign from God, is not the only one reported. Such circles are also springing up all over the rest of the world. After hearing this, Morgan decides that the only logical answer is that extra-terrestrials made them. He then convinces his sister, Bo (Abigail Breslin), his uncle, Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix Gladiator), and eventually his father.
Through a series of frightening events, the film depicts the change that this small town family undergoes and the renewal of faith in a man angry with God. With explorations into the matters of faith and whether or not there are coincidences, Signs is easily the best movie of the year. Like Shyamalan’s other movies (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable), it’s the little details that matter, for they are what make the ending so potent. Shyamalan (who also plays the character Ray) is the Charles Dickens of film making. In his movies, things that seem irrelevant in the beginning come together and give the power to the ending. Take good mental notes (Bo’s peculiar habit of taking one sip out of a glass of water and then leaving it wherever she is to go get a fresh cup…)! Fifty years from now, Shyamalan will be looked back on as one of the great directors of our time.
Signs is a movie that everybody, even those who don’t like scary movies, should see. (If you haven’t seen it already, put down your paper and go now!) Although it is frightening, the other themes greatly over power the fear factor. The film has an awesome message, awesome acting, and an awesome director. In short, Signs is a phenomenal picture that everyone should see!
