On Thursday, May 30, 2002 the Elmhurst Trojans played in the second game of the Division 3A Sectional after receiving a bye for the first game. The games were played at Indiana Tech and the Trojans were matched up with long-time rivals, the Wayne Generals, who also received a bye. Steve Purdy started out the game by pitching for the Trojans and with excellent defense behind him the score was 6-5 after the sixth. Mike Ybarra came in and closed, earning him a save for the game. The Trojans also benefited from excellent offense with big hits by almost the entire line-up. The first game ended with a stupendous catch by shortstop John Gayday. There was much celebration after the game as the Elmhurst Trojans were victorious and were given the opportunity to play in the final game of the sectional.

The second game, on June 1st, pitted the Elmhurst Trojans against the Heritage Patriots. Excellent offensive and defensive support behind senior Greg Kreiger who pitched seven innings allowed the Trojans to win Sectional with a final score of 7-1. Eric Sherrill, a freshman, played a vital role in both wins as his play behind the plate was near perfect.

The run at Sectionals was an amazing feat for the Trojans as they entered the Sectionals with a loosing record and what appeared to be little or no chance at winning the coveted title. The Trojans were led to the Sectional victory by second year Head Coach Mark Koos. Although the sectional ends the high school career of 5 seniors, Elmhurst is looking forward to keeping and adding to their talent pool.
