2002 MARKS THE FIRST TIME WOMEN WILL HOLD TOP TWO POSITIONS

Allen County Commissioner Linda K. Bloom began a yearlong term as President of the Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002. Bloom is the only woman ever to hold the position, having also served as President during 1998. Commissioner Ed Rousseau led the Board during 2001. As President, Bloom will lead the board in its weekly legislative sessions and serve as its spokeswoman.

Commissioner Marla Irving will serve as Vice President and Commissioner Rousseau will serve as secretary. This is the first time that women have held the board’s two top positions.

“This is going to be an exciting year for Allen County,” Bloom said. “I look forward to serving as President as the Commissioners take on a variety of challenges, ranging from environmental issues to finding ways to keep our transportation system in top condition.”

Bloom has served in Allen County government since 1978. Before being elected Commissioner in 1994 and assuming office in 1995, Bloom was Allen County Treasurer from 1981 to 1986. She served as Allen County Auditor until being elected to the Board of Commissioners. Bloom was the first woman ever elected to Board of Commissioners.

She currently serves as President of the Allen County Republican Women’s Club. She serves on several boards and commissions, including the Indiana Commission for Women, to which she was named in March 2001.

She also serves on the Major Gifts Committee of the Easter Seals ARC of Northeast Indiana. Her many awards and honors include being the recipient of the 2000 National Citizen Advocate Award from the Easter Seals ARC. Bloom received the YWCA “Women of Achievement Award” in 1998 and the Indiana Association of County Commissioners’ “Outstanding First Term Commissioner” Award in 1997.
