THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

I would like to take this time to thank Pastor Gary Miller, Betty Rekeweg and the entire Health and Caring Ministries team of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church for the chance to work together on our second prescription drug savings card sign-up. Mount Calvary provided the volunteers and their wonderful new facility, which helped us provide a valuable service to the people in this community who need and deserve it most. I commend them for their enthusiastic outreach efforts. I had a chance to spend time with a number of our seniors that day and marvel at their wisdom and resiliency. I was also pleased to see so many familiar faces.

Since the sign-up day, I have received numerous calls thanking us for making this service available. Although it was primarily for those in the Waynedale area, we received calls from as far away as Warsaw, Ossian and Columbia City.

As Wayne Township Trustee, it is my responsibility to make sure that our most vulnerable citizens are protected from the effects of a downturn in the economy. This drug card sign-up gave people on a fixed income a break on their monthly maintenance drugs. My goal was to recognize and serve those who have built the community that we all now enjoy.

This could not have been possible without the congregation of Mount Calvary, who believe that the mission of a church entails extending a hand outward as well as upward. I am proud to consider them a valuable community partner and a resource and look forward to working with them on future service projects.

I am still amazed at the willingness of people to reach out and help others. It renews my faith and reminds me of the decency of the human spirit. It seems there are more and more people in this world who say, “Don’t get involved,” or “It’s not my problem”, and I sincerely thank God for those wonderful people who ignore that negative message.
