Waynedale Political Commentaries

DEAR WAYNEDALE READERS

As I look back on 2004, I can see how we are all working together to build a better city.

We had another successful year of infrastructure projects. $35 million was invested to improve our transportation, water, sewer, and stormwater systems. In addition, another 40 miles of streets were paved. These investments help us compete for new jobs and retain the hundreds of good jobs we currently have in Fort Wayne.

In July, we received nearly $1 million to begin demolishing more than a dozen homes that suffered serious damage due to flooding. I hosted our first “Greenway Summit.” The City has committed $2 million over the next four years to improve and add trails and greenways in the community. We believe our $2 million commitment will leverage a total of $8 million as we expand recreation and exercise opportunities and improve our quality of life.

A $35 million CEDIT bond was approved. This will improve our infrastructure including paving, road widening, greenway expansions, and investments in downtown. We are setting the stage for a great future for you and your family.

Nearly $1 million came back to the Fort Wayne community thanks to our “Money in Your Pocket” campaign. Many working families are benefiting from the earned income tax credit program. Great progress is being made at Southtown. Menards is expected to break ground in the spring. We anticipate several more stores will follow their lead and hundreds of jobs will be created.

City employees continue to use Six Sigma and new technology tools to make government more efficient and customer friendly for you. I am proud of the many successes and look forward to a great 2005.

Our city team will work hard to serve you.

Graham Richard
Mayor
