COUNCILMAN’S CORNER
By the time you read this column the question of whether the planned January 1, 2006 annexation of the Aboite’s area will be blocked by the state legislature, may be settled. The city has spent millions of dollars in infrastructure improvements in Aboite and the Indiana Supreme Court signed off on the annexation. Hopefully the cooler heads in Indy will prevail and the annexation, which will be one more step toward unifying our community, will proceed as planned.
The City Council Flood Committee is continuing to meet and is helping coordinate the efforts of the Fort Wayne City Utilities division, as well as, county and regional efforts to prevent and respond to flooding. I’m pushing for a comprehensive long-range flood-fighting plan for the Fort Wayne area. A similar long-range plan to eliminate “combined sewer overflows” has been in place for ten years and has been successful, thanks in part, to the excellent long-term support of the citizen members of the Sewer Advisory Group. I’m well aware that the south side of our city has been hit hard by flooding in recent years. We need to look at the entire city and build on the advances made since the terrible flood of 2003.
At 6:30pm on Monday, March 21, the Southwest Waynedale Association will meet at the community center behind the fire station on Old Trail Road. Neighborhood President Beulah Stoker has offered to work with the citizens who reside in the Southwest Waynedale Association area (west of Bluffton Road and south of Lower Huntington Road) to help them advocate for improvements in their neighborhood. I’m looking forward to a few citizens in the Southwest Waynedale area coming to that meeting so we can get things on the right track once again in the Southwest Waynedale area! See ya there!
Earlier this month Mayor Graham Richard announced his $1 BILLION private investment goal for Fort Wayne for the next 2-3 years. We’re off to a good start with the $200 million GM investment in their Fort Wayne plant, the $70 million Verizon is spending to build an extensive fiber optic network, and the $35 million investment in new buildings and printing equipment downtown by Fort Wayne Newspapers. Thanks to the Mayor for his leadership and to the above businesses ,as well as, many others for their visionary investments to grow their companies and benefit our community at the same time!
Mark your calendar for a major rally at the Kruse WWII Victory Museum in Auburn at 12 noon on Saturday, April 9 in support of keeping the inpatient beds open at the local VA Hospital. Our vets deserve our support! See you there!
