THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

Great Turnout Expected for Crimes Against the Elderly Program

The Wayne Township Trustee’s Office has always tried to be proactive in its service to the community, make our services user-friendly and our requirements for assistance clear and available to the general public. Applications for assistance are posted on our website at waynetownship.org and can be downloaded to enable clients to complete them prior to coming into the office. It is our mission to provide services and information that will improve the quality of life and thereby lessen the need for public assistance.
We plan a number of service projects each year and always try to partner with other agencies, businesses and even churches. These partnerships are crucial because they permit us to reach almost all segments of our diverse population.

Our next community project is a workshop called “Crimes Against the Elderly.” This event will be held Wednesday, June 8th, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church located at 819 Reservation Drive. The workshop is designed to better inform seniors on the threat of potential crimes against them. It will also provide valuable information on living wills and estate planning. The Wayne Township Trustee Office will have staff available at the workshop to answer any questions regarding emergency medications and our Payee Program. Representatives from the Better Business Bureau will provide information on how to avoid financial crimes.

The senior population has often been a target for criminals. Many seniors reside alone and depend upon others to help them meet some of their basic needs. Also many seniors long for fellowship and may engage in conversations with criminals thus allowing them to ascertain information leading to burglaries and home invasions. Many seniors fall prey to door-to-door salesmen who use tactics of fear to coerce sales from them. Often home repair scams leave seniors with half completed or shoddy capital improvements.

At the Wayne Township Trustee Office, we meet the victims of senior crime on a regular basis. We are aware of the devastating effect it has on them. Some will go without food or medicine because of their shame of being duped by criminals. We can help prevent this type of crime from happening by empowering seniors with information. Theses proactive measures are a major component of the holistic approach that helps improve the quality of life in our community. Saving tax dollars by preventing crime is just another way to fulfill the dual role of the Wayne Township Trustee.

We strongly believe that government works most effectively when partnerships with community organizations are capitalized upon to make most of its resources. The Wayne Township Trustee’s Office is also proud of our relationship with all of the faith-based organizations in the Fort Wayne area. We know that our jobs are made a little easier because they exist. We would like to offer a special thanks to Pastor Dave Adams and the congregation of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church for co-sponsoring and hosting the Crimes Against the Elderly event in their fellowship hall.

The Wayne Township Trustee’s Office will also sponsor another community service program this summer. Our Annual Computer Explorers Camp will begin in June. We would like to give special recognition and gratitude to the Paul Clarke Foundation for the grant that has graciously funded our program for the last six years.
