COUNCILMAN’S CORNER
It was great to hear the recent preliminary news from the Department of Defense that the Air National Guard unit at Fort Wayne International Airport will not only remain in Fort Wayne but will expand following the transfer of the military unit from Illinois. Our community has always supported the National Guard and many active duty military troops and veterans are from this area. The final Defense Department decision will be made at a later date but it’s great for Fort Wayne and the Waynedale area to receive this good news from the base closure commission.
I’ve received many calls over the last few months regarding trash and debris at the northeast corner of the Freeman/Nuttman intersection. Residents of the Indian Village neighborhood in particular are fed up with the trashy property just down the street. I’ve had several conversations with the representatives of at least two city departments regarding this area. The property owner has agreed to a plan to clean up the site and the city will follow up with an inspection in the near future.
I recently visited the Southwest Conservation Club where they have made some changes to enhance safety. The barrier behind the target range is much higher and longer and the target area is smaller than in the past. The range is also shorter. These changes were made based on recommendations made by Officer Dean Jenkins of the Indiana DNR when he visited the SWCC earlier this year. Thanks to the SWCC, which contributes so much to our community!
Thanks also to Commander Larry Thiele and the members of David Parrish American Legion Post #296 for their invitation for me to speak at their Post recently. Active duty members of the U.S. Military Services were honored during a special ceremony. I was happy to see several kids at the ceremony, which emphasized respect for our country and our armed services, as well as, veterans.
Enjoy the spring! Give me a call with any concerns or suggestions regarding our city and the south side.
