SOUTHSIDE’S LADY ARCHERS CHAMPIONSHIP HALTED BY ANDERSON

As I watched the girl’s state final basketball games on TV recently, I was reflecting back on the phenomenal season the Lady Archers from South Side High School just completed. It was a great ‘ride’ through the past three seasons with our head coach Andy Rang and his assistant David Goodwell. Coach Rang is now the winningest coach in the history of girl’s basketball at Fort Wayne South. In his first season, the Lady Archers lost in sectional finals against Huntington North High School at the Northrop sectional. During the 2005-2006 season Fort Wayne South completed an astounding record of 20 wins. One of the highest win records in school history, but they came up one win short with a loss to Huntington North High School once again for a sectional victory.

The 2006-2007 season began with a summer off-season campaign against schools from Marion, New Castle, Anderson and others. They finished with a summer record of 14 wins against 0 losses. Fans of the Lady Archers were soon to discover this would be the beginning of a wonderful and fun campaign of girl’s basketball.

The very first game of the regular season was against pre-season number one ranked South Bend Washington. South defeated them and they were on their way to what would be their best season on school history.

Early on in their regular basketball season, the girl’s would set another school record by defeating the team from Wayne and scoring 107 points. This was the first time ever for a girl’s basketball team from South Side to go over the century mark.

When it came time to compete for the SAC Holiday basketball tournament championship, the Lady Archers were up to the task and defeated the defending champions Bishop Luers.

When post-season tournament time came along, they looked forward to playing Huntington North again. It wasn’t meant to be because the Lady Vikes were eliminated early.

South finally did win their ‘first’ sectional championship, but the girls didn’t know how to celebrate when it came to cutting down the ‘nets’. This was all uncharted territory for them. The officials set up the ladder for the process and when that was accomplished, the ladder was moved to the other end of the floor for the other net. The girl’s had to be told they were ‘allowed’ to cut down both nets and some girl’s asked, “Can we do that?” When the final rankings for the Class 4A girl’s basketball teams were published, Fort Wayne South Side ended up at number 3, another school record.

Now it was time to move on to the Regional at Huntington North gymnasium. Sad to say, the Lady Archers from South Side run to state championship was stopped by Anderson in overtime. The team from Anderson had the highest scoring average in the state, while South Side was averaging over 70 points per game.

We couldn’t be prouder of the way the Lady Archers conducted themselves during the season, which ended with a record of 23 wins against only 2 losses.
