FWCS NAMES TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR
The longtime director of transportation for Lawrence Township Schools in Indianapolis has taken the helm of Fort Wayne Community Schools’ massive transportation department. Gary S. Lake replaces Lynn Hower, who retired in December. He had been with Lawrence Township since 1995.
Earlier in his career, he spent several years as a teacher and assistant principal for FWCS. “Mr. Lake brings extensive experience in the field of transportation, but he also has been in the front lines of education as a teacher and building administrator. This combination will be a real asset to FWCS as our transportation department works toward providing exceptional service to our students, staff and parents,” said Dr. Doug Coutts, chief operations officer. “We are delighted to have Mr. Lake as our transportation director.”
He will direct all aspects of the FWCS transportation department, which includes the safe delivery of more than 25,000 students each day. The district has a fleet of 300 buses, staff of 334 and a $19.4 million annual budget.
Lake began his career as a health/physical education teacher in 1969 at Woodlan High School. He held administrative positions at Leo High School and was an assistant principal at Heritage High School in 1984-85. The following year he began a stint at FWCS as a physical education teacher at Wayne High School. In 1987 he was named assistant principal at Elmhurst High School and in 1990 moved to Blackhawk Middle School in that capacity. He left FWCS in 1992 to join East Allen County Schools as director of transportation, a position he held until 1995.
