EASTER-SPRING EXCITEMENT

Finally we have warmed up into the 50’s and above and our bulbs that were planted last fall are starting to make an appearance peaking through the soil. But for me it is more than just those bulbs outside because we are planting all of the spring flowers in the greenhouses-spring flowers such as geraniums, New Guinea impatiens, Non-Stop begonias, several varieties of “Proven Winners” and of course, thousands of hanging baskets. Oh yes, and even tomatoes are being started at this early date. For most of you, tomatoes should not be started from seed until the first or second week of April. This will give you plants just in time for re-planting outside and not over-grown, “how-do-I-slow-them-down” plants.
Another reason this is a great time for flowers is because of Easter. Other than the spring season, there is never a better time for large varieties of blooming flowers than right now. Blooming flowers include azaleas, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, tulips, and hyacinths, and of course, Easter lilies. Other interesting blooming plants at this time include calandiva, gerbera daisies, African violets, calla lilies, cyclamen, mini-roses and kalanchoe.

Easter is very early this year, March 23rd and will not be this date again until the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was March 23rd was 1913 so only if you are 95 years or older would you have been here to see it. For Easter to fall on March 22nd, you would have to wait until the year 2285 (277 years from now) and the last time was 1818. So no one alive today has ever seen it happen. Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (March 20).
