ARTWORK BY BISHOP LUERS STUDENT TRAVELS THE U.S.
Ronnie Archuletta receives Scholastic Gold, National, and ART.WRITE.NOW.DC honors.
The recognition keeps coming for Bishop Luer’s junior Ronnie Archuletta as he receives multiple honors for his self-portrait entitled, “Stand Out.” His mixed media drawing won a regional Scholastic Gold Key followed by a national award in May 2015. Ronnie and his teacher, Kristen Billingsley, were invited to attend the awards ceremony held at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Ronnie was granted an Alliance Summer Arts Program (ASAP) Award to attend the Cranbrook Summer Art Institute at Cranbrook Art Academy where he studied product design. He met students from Puerto Rico, Nigeria, China and other parts of the world and the U.S. The two-week program included a visit to the Academy archives, the Detroit Museum of Art and a relaxing trip to Lake Michigan. Ronnie enjoys having friends from around the world.
Most recently Ronnie learned his work has earned a coveted spot in the ART.WRITE.NOW.DC EXHIBITION, which consists of 30 student artworks (selected out of tens of thousands nationally) that will tour around the country beginning at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building in Washington, D.C.
Ronnie and his teacher, along with the other select students and educators, have been invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held on September 25th. The day’s activities will include student and educator workshops and special docent-led museum tours in the afternoon.
When asked what he hopes his work communicates to others, Ronnie responded, “I have always been different than everyone else. I don’t fit in like other people. I want others to know they are not alone.”
Ronnie has a natural humility and was surprised his work is being so highly recognized. He would like other kids like him to know that, “You can turn nothing into something. You can be somebody, no matter what other people say.”
Ronnie hopes to attend Purdue University to earn his bachelor and masters degrees in architecture.
