CITY OF FORT WAYNE’S BLUE STAR BANNER PROGRAM CONTINUES – Message From The Mayor

It was an honor to see a lot of you at the Waynedale Memorial Day Parade. The event was a great way to recognize and remember the true sacrifices of our military personnel. Thank you for taking time out of your day to pay your respects to our heroes.

I’m pleased to announce the City of Fort Wayne’s Blue Star Banner program is continuing in 2015.

The Blue Star Banner initiative started in May 2014 and recognizes City of Fort Wayne residents and City government employees who are actively deployed. Last year, more than 30 banners were displayed to honor service members.

Family and friends of deployed military personnel are encouraged to complete an application at www.cityoffortwayne.org/bluestarbanner. Once the applications are reviewed, banners will be made and displayed on light poles along West Jefferson Boulevard from the Time Corners area to Swinney Park. Banners will be displayed through November and then removed during the winter months.

Individuals or companies interested in making a donation to the Blue Star Banner program by being a sponsor may contact Karen Richards, Mayor’s Office, (260) 427-2146 and karen.richards@cityoffortwayne.org.

I also wanted to share with you that the City of Fort Wayne has received a Sustainable Indiana Green Legacy Award.

Sustainable Indiana 2016 is honoring communities that are moving forward with sustainable practices and are model cities when it comes to green initiatives.

The City’s commitment to green initiatives has touched many areas in the community, from the giving away of free CFL lightbulbs, to changing traffic signals to energy efficient LED lighting, to increasing residential recycling from 34 percent to 83 percent in five years, to improvements being made to our sewer system to protect our rivers, to greening our fleet of more than 2,000 vehicles – an accomplishment that has received international attention.

I continue to be encouraged by the positive momentum and investments we’re seeing throughout all of Fort Wayne. We’re honored to be recognized for the efforts of our City employees who are committed to sustainability initiatives that lead to providing excellent services to residents and businesses. As we engage, innovate, and perform, we’re building a better City that’s efficient and effective at meeting the needs of our community in a proactive manner.
