WAYNEDALE PICNIC GROWS
On Saturday, August 27 our Waynedale community had the greatest “Picnic in the Park” yet and it took place in our own Waynedale Park. Over the years our picnic has grown in every way with more families coming to enjoy the free food, music, children’s games and entertainment for all.
This is a very unique picnic for a community. Donations and contributions from local companies and friends of Waynedale provide this opportunity. Collections are made months in advance and the contributors are listed at the picnic on a very large sponsor board.
The basic idea for our community is to come together and enjoy a fun-filled day in our great park, and nothing more than that. No soliciting or costs involved but only a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy with your friends and family.
Our picnic started at 10 am with a signup booth to have everyone sign for possible free door prizes. The tickets were counted for an overall head count and this was our base tally. This year our picnic had over 1575 people sign in! Then when you add in our 60 volunteers, 23 vendor tables, and other helpers we have estimated over 1700 people there throughout the day. This is an amazing amount of people that came out and the great weather surely helped. Our food tent and pizza wagon was busy from 11 am to about 1:30pm until the food ran out. Then our sweet tooth was offered cake and ice cream. Everyone had water, juice and frozen pops.
The children did enjoy face painting and tattoos, balloons, crafts, games and animals. Our craft tent was huge with several craft-making ideas for the children. Children (0-13 years) played free games to win a prize and even a free bowling game. The adults played Bingo and won free prizes. We had several new fun things to do this year with pony/horse rides, and Noah’s arc with small animals by the Future Farmers of America. Also snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn and other treats. Some of the children jumped in the moonwalk, on the sticky wall and playland. The bigger kids climbed the rock wall (provided by the Army National Guard). We had many other participants such as, “Big Boy, Taco Bell and Long John, along with Louie the “lighting bug” and “Star”. There was a “PickleBall game ” which took place by Mitch Harper and others this year.
Thanks to DJ Kim Neal for the music and lending us his microphone to make announcements. Thanks to all the great vendors and their addition to the picnic. The day went on without any major problems and we wish to thank all the great people that helped and came to enjoy the day.
