“RACE FOR THE WARRIOR” TO BE HELD ON FWA RUNWAY

Runway 5/23 at the Fort Wayne International Airport is usually for planes, but on Saturday, April 27, it’s nearly 12,000 feet of asphalt and concrete will be used to raise money for local military families in crisis.

The airport, which sits on the same site that was once a World War II military base, will be the site of the fifth annual Race for the Warrior, benefiting the Military Support Fund, a function of the Northeast Indiana Base Community Council (NIBCC). The Military Support Fund provides emergency financial assistance to local military and transitioning veteran families in urgent financial need, often helping avoid an eviction, loss of electricity/heat, and similar challenges.

“Race for the Warrior is more than a fun way to spend a Saturday morning,” Eric Flores, race co-chair and Army veteran, said. “The support from this race enables us to provide critical and almost immediate support to local military and veteran families. In the past, grants from the fund have saved families from temporary homelessness, loss of heat or electricity during cold winter weather, and other similarly challenging situations.”

The race is held at the Fort Wayne International Airport on the 5/23 runway, which runs southwest on the southern side of the airport. Typically, this runway is the landing and launching site for the ANG-122 A-10, United, Delta, American, Allegiant, UPS and Fed Ex but for a few hours it will turn into the course for a 5K run/walk, 10K race and 5K/10K wheelchair race.

Runners, walkers, families and even a few dogs will travel the runway race course, followed by an awards ceremony and celebration, including lunch, drinks and live music from an all-veteran band.

Our service men and women have given so much for our nation, and this cause allows us to give back to them when they need it most,” Patrick Dooley, NIBCC President, said. “We are grateful for all of our sponsors and runners who will make this race and this fundraiser a success for the fifth year running.”

Registration for runners is now open and space is limited. Runners may also create a team and register a group. For more information or to register, visit www.raceforthewarrior.com. To sponsor the race, contact Kristi Jarmus, sponsorship chair, at kjarmus@outlook.com.

Race For the Warrior (R4TW) is NIBCC’s primary annual fundraising event for the Military Support Fund, which provides emergency assistance to local military and veteran families in urgent financial need. R4TW runners enjoy a 5K run/walk, 10K race or 5K/10K wheelchair race on the Fort Wayne International Airport runway.
