DON’T FORGET MOTHER’S DAY – Voice Of The Township

It seems hard to believe that it’s May already, but here we are in the last month of spring. This is a busy month for us at the Township office. All of our departments are running at full speed, and the staff here becomes even more actively involved in community events as the weather gets nicer.

Friday, May 13th is the final day that we will be accepting applications for the Recognizing Achievement Scholarship, and the winners will be awarded at our Wayne Township board meeting in June. A committee of staff members and I will spend this month reviewing applications with the goal of rewarding students who have demonstrated high or improved achievement in their high school careers in spite of their family’s limited financial means. Many of our past RAS recipients demonstrated not only academic success, but they were involved in giving back to their community as well. I’m looking forward to another set of high-quality applicants this year as well. These scholarships are not funded by tax-payer dollars but are sponsored by our staff and other individual donors.

On Saturday, May 21, staff members and workfare clients will be participating in the Great American Cleanup, an event the City’s website describes as, the nation’s largest community improvement program that Fort Wayne has participated in for over 20 years. It is a time when we can show our community pride by lending a hand to clean up littered roadsides, parks, trails and river ways. The City provides groups with garbage bags, gloves, and T-shirts. After the work is done, a volunteer celebration with food, drinks, prizes and live entertainment is held at Headwaters West from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you are interested in participating in this fun and rewarding event, you can get details on the City of Fort Wayne’s website.

On Monday, May 30 our office will once again be marching in the Waynedale Memorial Day Parade. This is one of my favorite events as I get to shake hands with the fine folks who line the streets of Waynedale with their smiles and American flags. I find it to be a great way to remember and honor the military men and women who’ve given so much to our country.

And of course I cannot forget Mother’s Day. Always at this time of year I think of my own dearly departed mother and remember how she and the other women who helped to raise me took such loving care of me. And I want to recognize all of the mothers in our community. Their job may be rewarding, but it’s not easy. I am always reminded of that fact as I meet the young mothers and their children who come to our office in need of assistance. I salute all the mothers and encourage everyone to thank their own mom this 8th of May.

So May promises to be busy and full of excitement here at the Township. I wish all of you a happy month as well.
