OPPOSITION AND LEGAL CHALLENGES – Homeschooling Is Where The Heart Is!

This month I continue my interview with Shawn Ambrose, a homeschooling father and member of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), about homeschooling and Hoosier Academy.

Shawn explains why two attorneys and homeschooling dads, Mike Farris and Mike Smith, founded the HSLDA in March 1983, “Homeschooling was just a tiny blip on the educational radar. The age-old concept of parents teaching their children at home had fallen into obscurity. Families, who chose such a “nontraditional” route, encountered opposition and legal challenges from the educational bureaucracy as well as from their own friends and relatives. Seeing a need for affordable legal advocacy the two Mikes joined forces to establish a nonprofit ministry to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children and to protect family freedoms.”

Is Hoosier Academy a legitimate option for educating your child? Yes. Hoosier Academy’s web page states that it “…is a public charter school authorized by Ball State University (that) makes learning fresh and exciting for children just like yours.” No curriculum choices are afforded to the parents; therefore, it’s a school you can “send” your child to while she’s at home.

Shawn defines homeschooling as, “The ultimate privatization of education because parents assume responsibility for the formal instruction of their child at home through securing funding, choosing curriculum and determining how to grade and progress their child.”
To be continued….

Until next month God bless you and your little or not so little ones!
