AREA FUNDRAISERS BENEFIT WAYNEDALE TRAILS & SIDEWALKS
Two events were held in the latter part of October to raise money for the Waynedale Trails and Sidewalks Initiative.
On October 25th, Kingston Residence hosted a Trunk or Treat at their Assisted Living on Winchester Road. Executive Director Erin Floyd stated, “We had a beautiful day for the event and 24 area businesses turned out to support the Waynedale Initiative.” Each business paid a fee to participate in the Trunk or Treat and the proceeds went to the fund. Donations were also accepted at this free event for the kids and approximately 250 children enjoyed the treats, costumes and decorations. The event raised approximately $950.
Curly’s on Bluffton Road hosted a fundraiser on the evening of October 27th. It featured a 10% donation of sales on food and domestic beer. Tina Brown, co-owner of Curly’s along with her husband David, said, “It’s important that our community has consistency with our sidewalks and trails. Every individual that wishes to walk or bike should have the opportunity to safely do so and reach every destination they choose in the Waynedale area. It helps area businesses and promotes a healthy lifestyle. It’s a win/win for everyone.” The Browns generously donated a check in the amount of $300 to the Waynedale Trails & Sidewalks Initiative.
Camille Garrison, committee member of the Waynedale Trails & Sidewalks Initiative provided us with a brief update of the status of the ongoing projects in Waynedale. Regarding the Lower Huntington bridge she stated, “A 6′ sidewalk will be installed from the intersection of Lower Huntington and Winchester Road running in front of Penguin Point Restaurant that will lead to a ramp connecting with the St. Mary’s Pathway coming from Foster Park. This will allow people bicycling and walking to have a safe access point to the trail system. It is part of a larger project that will enhance the intersection and provide patching to the road from Airport Expressway to the Fairfield/Tillman intersection. Brooks Construction has a projected completion date of 6-30-15 on this project.
Garrison continued with additional information in regards to the Bluffton Road project. “We just wrote a check to the City of Fort Wayne from our fund for survey work to begin on adding a 10′ trail and 5′ sidewalks from the Lower Huntington/Bluffton Road intersection down to West Foster Park on Winchester Road. This is the first of many steps leading to the construction starting. We can anticipate that it will easily be mid 2016 before work is started on the first phase, Lower Huntington to Old Trail Road.” According to Dawn Ritchie, Greenways Manager, “This is all dependent on funding and acquiring the necessary right of way in a timely fashion.”
The Waynedale Trails & Sidewalks Initiative will continue to fundraise to re-build the coffers. The dedicated committee hopes to continue their schedule of one fundraiser per month and wishes to thank the following businesses who have held fundraisers: Bobicks, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Curly’s, Curves, Dairy Queen, Hair Affair, Kingston Residence, Nine-Mile, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, The Stand, Wing’s Etc. among other local businesses who offer collection cans for the cause.
Upcoming fundraisers include selling packages of trail mix at Darlington Farms on Saturday, November 8th. Subway will be donating 10% of their sales at their Waynedale location next to Cap’n Cork on Monday, December 15th from 5 – 8 p.m., you must bring a flyer. Subway will also be holding a second fundraiser at their Bluffton Road location next to Shell in the month of January.
Camille Garrison, the marketing director at Kingston Residence added, “Be sure to mark your calendar for Tuesday, March 24th for the 7th Annual Taste of Waynedale to be held at Mount Calvary Church. This is a favorite and is always one of our largest Waynedale & Trails Sidewalks Fundraising opportunities.
