IS LAVISH TOILET PAPER HARMING YOUR PLUMBING?

The average person enjoys a little pampering in their life. When it comes to toilet paper, most consumers want the strongest, softest rolls available. However, the effect these luxurious sheets have on a home’s plumbing could be costly in the long run.

“Many homeowners fail to consider their toilet paper as a cause of their clogged toilets,” stated Glenn Gallas, Mr. Rooter Plumbing Franchise Consultant and former Mr. Rooter franchise owner and plumber. “But, the softer and stronger a sheet of toilet paper is, the longer it will take and the harder it is to break down.”

For older or more finicky plumbing, this failure to dissolve can lead to chronic plumbing issues such as clogging and flooding back into the home. To address this concern, Gallas suggests researching toilet tissues that are soft and easily dissolve. “One-ply toilet papers, generally speaking, tend to have a faster dissolve rate. The higher the ply and concentration of cotton in a tissue, the harder it will be to flush through your plumbing system.”

Good Housekeeping reviewed 22 types of toilet paper and graded them on 10 tests. One of the elements they considered was how quickly a sheet dissolved, among other factors.

While the strong, absorbent and oh-so-soft toilet paper may be a real treat for the derrière, it could be wreaking havoc on the plumbing. Homeowners should consider searching for a middle ground brand that will satisfy the desire to pamper and the need to keep the pipes flowing. In the end, a comfortable caboose could come with a hefty price tag for the homes pipes and plumbing.
