MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

MAYOR TOM HENRYSummer is over and our neighborhoods are bursting with the sights and sounds of autumn. A normal fall sight is our leaves falling to the ground and I wanted to take this opportunity to share information about the City’s leaf collection plan.

This year’s leaf collection will begin October 24th and run through December 9th. Once again we will make two passes through each part of the City. The collection crews will start on the North side of the city and work their way South.

Crews will be in the Waynedale area, and other neighborhoods on the South Side, for a first pass the week of November 7, and a second and final pass the week of December 9.

There will not be leaf collection on Friday, Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day.
The week of Thanksgiving, from Nov. 21 through Nov. 23, will be used as a catch-up week.

In order to assist our crews in a smooth leaf pick-up process, our Street Department offers the following tips:

•Have your leaves ready for pick-up on the first day of your scheduled week.

•Rake leaves onto the park strip area between the sidewalk and the curb, or collect them in biodegradable yard waste bags and place them on the curb. Please do not rake leaves into the street, as they may clog storm drains and cause street flooding.

If you decide to collect your leaves biodegradable bags, you can call 311 and have your leaves picked up within two business days.

Burning leaves within city limits is a violation of city code. The fine is $50; the fine will increase to $75, if not paid within 30 days.

Inclement weather conditions or a heavy volume of leaves in one area may force us to slightly modify our schedule.

Please go to the city website, www.cityoffortwayne.org/leaves, or call the leaf hotline at 427-2302 after Oct. 24 for daily updates on what neighborhoods crews will be collecting leaves that day.

During leaf collection season we should also remember an important safety precaution by not allowing children to play in piles of leaves in the street.
