IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO SAVE ELMHURST

A new group of families, students and alumni has been formed to continue the campaign to prevent the closure of Elmhurst High School (EHS). Save Our School – Elmhurst (SOSEHS) is pursuing legal action against Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS) through Allen County Superior Court which has the authority to overrule a school board decision. We have already consulted with an attorney and developed a legal strategy. Families across the nation are protesting the closure of public schools and some legal precedents have been established. We have a 50/50 chance of a judge ruling in our favor. There is still hope of keeping EHS open; FWCS is not the final authority!

EHS has achieved a zero dropout rate, led local high schools in graduation rate gains, posts passing ISTEP scores and has championship athletics within a successful small school model that makes it possible for educators to ensure that no child is left behind. EHS has special programs to assist students with learning disabilities that are not available in any other FWCS high school. In contrast, the schools EHS students are slated to attend — North Side, South Side and Wayne — are “failing” by state standards. Per Matt Tusing, Administrative Law Specialist with the Indiana State Board of Education, due to their “failing” status, these three schools are eligible for federal stimulus grants ranging from $50,000 to $2 million every year for the next three years. Ironically, EHS does not qualify because it isn’t in the lowest 5-20% of failing schools.

If you believe EHS should remain open, please make an immediate donation to our legal defense fund. Donations will be used for court filing costs and our attorney retainer. Donations in any amount from spare change and up are welcome! Supporters may donate online via PayPal at www.sosehs.com or volunteers will collect your cash donation upon request. If you are unable to donate, but would like to support our efforts, please join our staff of volunteers. EHS students are holding carwash fundraisers. Students are also sponsoring a raffle of a football autographed by EHS alum, James Hardy, of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the carwash. To schedule a donation pickup, volunteer or have questions answered, please call 602-5870 or email ehsalumni@sosehs.com. Go Trojans!
