HAYHURST TAKES MONEY LEAD
Challenging an eight-term incumbent with deep Washington money connections usually serves as a strong deterrent for any would-be dark horse challenger; but Dr. Tom Hayhurst has bucked that trend.
The Federal Election Commission recently released its quarterly reports of candidate campaign finance and the Tom Hayhurst for Congress campaign has more money in the bank than any of the other four declared candidates. While opponents padded their pockets with massive donations from corporations and lobbyists, most of Hayhurst’s support came from residents of the Third District; individuals affiliated with both or no political parties.
“I’m blown away by the bipartisan support I’ve received from Hoosiers in Northeast Indiana,” Hayhurst said. “For too long Congress has let lobbyists and special interests eat off the menu on the taxpayer’s dime in exchange for funds to line their campaign coffers. I’m thrilled that folks in our district have said ‘enough is enough.’ The support of the everyday citizen is why I will win in the fall.”
Financial support is only part of Hayhurst’s fight for new leadership in Washington. A vibrant grassroots organization is at the center of any campaign for elected office. Even nine months before the election, Tom Hayhurst has seen a groundswell of volunteer support. At a recent phone banking event, almost 60 volunteers came out and used their precious cell phone minutes to contact voters about Tom’s candidacy.
“Such strong support so early in the campaign showed us that the network of the 2006 campaign is still incredibly robust in 2010,” Hayhurst said. “I can’t wait to build on this momentum.”
