WAYNEDALE OUTDOORS Q & A

(A column, whereas, you the reader may ask Ben questions about camping, cooking, hunting, fishing, or anything concerning living in our Great Outdoors.)

Q – Where can I find a good outdoor cookbook?
A – Go to the Boy Scout store at 8315 Jefferson Boulevard here in Fort Wayne and get their newest one titled The SCOUT’S OUTDOOR COOKBOOK by Christine & Tim Conners. They should have them in stock. It contains 357 pages of mouth-watering recipes and some of them are award-winning recipes. Each recipe has a picture at the top of the page that tells you how to or if you should cook it. There’s a picture of a Dutch oven (to be cooked in a Dutch oven with coals) – A large pot (Cook pot on camp stove) – Skillet (Skillet on camp stove or fire) – Camp fire (Foil, pie iron, or skewer over flames or in fire pit) – BBQ Grill (Foil, skewer, or other direct heating on grill) – Backpack (Specifically for backpacking) – Round circle with a hash mark through the word cook (No heat source required). There is even a section that tells you how to cook in a cardboard box.(pages 343 – 344). It sells for about $22.95 not including tax.

(Check pages 266 – 267 for Ray’s World Famous Dutch Oven Pound Cake recipe and page 276 for Ray’s World Famous Bread Puddin’ recipe.)

Tim and Christine have two other cookbooks that you might be interested in: Llipsmackin’ Backpakin’ and Llipsmackin’ Vegetarian Backpackin’. I’m not sure if these last two are available at the Scout store but you can call them at 432-9593 and ask.

Q – What is poaching?
A – Here’s what I got from the DNR: Poaching is the illegal taking of fish, game or non-game wildlife. While poachers don’t wait for legal hunting times, hunting season increases the likelihood that licensed, ethical hunters will encounter them. DNR Law Enforcement urges hunters to use the TIP hotline to file a complaint. TIP is an acronym for Turn In a Poacher. The toll-free TIP phone number is 1-800-TIP-IDNR (1-800-847-4367). Complaints also may be filed at tip.IN.gov.
•A typical poaching situation occurs when a law-abiding hunter is sitting in a tree stand, waiting for sunrise (the legal time to shoot), and notices a spotlight shining the field from a pickup truck. The truck stops and shots ring out through the darkness.
•Lt. Mark Farmer, public information officer for the DNR Division of Law Enforcement said, “True sportsmen have an ethical responsibility to report this violation and it is not fair to the honest hunter that a poacher gets away with this illegal method of hunting. Poachers are thieves and estimates indicate that poachers kill as much fish and game as legal hunters and fishermen do.”
•The TIP program is a joint effort of sports men and women, private citizens, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to help eliminate the illegal taking of Indiana’s fish and wildlife. Cash rewards are offered for information leading to the arrest of fish and wildlife law violators.
•Neither videotapes nor signed confessions are required for successful prosecution of poachers. Citizens who provide TIP with information are not required to give their names or testify in court. This information is investigated by Indiana Conservation Officers.
