Waynedale Political Commentaries

VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

Two very important days for our community and our country are coming up this week and next week. Those days are Election Day on November 6 and Veterans’ Day on November 11.

We too often take for granted our right and privilege to vote for our leaders, this year for those who will lead our City for the next four years. Some citizens, for whatever reason, don’t bother to take advantage of our right to vote, a right that many throughout the world would love to have.

I encourage all of you Waynedale readers to exercise your right to vote on November 6. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to the Election Board, no voting places in Waynedale have changed since 2006. If you don’t know your polling place, you can log in to www.indianavoters.com and click on polling places. Or, you can contact the Allen County Election Board or the political parties’ headquarters.

The week after Election Day we set aside a day to honor the men and women who have served, and are serving, our country as members of the military services. We cannot say enough about the sacrifices our servicemen and women and their families make for us.

Our Outreach Coordinator Tameka Crook’s husband has just returned to this Country from service in Iraq and is on his way back to Fort Wayne. We are so thankful for the safe return of Army Reserve Sgt. Shaun Crook from his second overseas tour.

Our Health Cities Health Fair and Veterans’ Stand Down, another way we at Wayne Township honor our veterans, was on October 26. I want to thank the many people who volunteered their time and all the agencies which contributed to provide health care services for veterans, and uninsured and underinsured persons.

Recently, I started a new program at my office to help those in need of food. We have partnered with Community Harvest Food Bank for its Farm Wagon to bring food to the parking lot of the Trustee’s Office on Monday mornings at 9 a.m.

The week before I wrote this column, the Farm Wagon served forty-six families including 70 children. The Farm Wagon brings healthy food such as milk, juice, bread, produce and apple chips, which are distributed in our parking lot to anyone in need.

I am so glad we were able to partner with Community Harvest to bring this wonderful program to Wayne Township.

On Thursday, November 8, I will be participating in another worthy cause, Flavor of Fall, a soup cook-off to raise money for the Brenda Hanchar Foundation. Cindy Cornwell from The Waynedale News graciously invited me to be one of the cooks for this event, which will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Baker Street Station.

The Brenda Hanchar Foundation provides medical equipment, medical supplies and medications to those individuals who cannot afford to provide these things for themselves. Please visit me on November 8 at the fundraiser, eat some of my fabulous chili and definitely vote for my chili as the best soup.
