COUNCILMAN’S CORNER
City Council is currently reviewing the proposed 2008 city budget. As has been true for the last several years, the budget will likely grow by only 3-5%. Also, city government uses only a little over 20% of all property taxes paid by city residents. As you are probably aware, under Indiana law, Council can only cut the budget put together by the Mayor and his department heads. Most costs are personnel related and non-public safety city employee numbers have been very flat for the last several years. I’d like to have your input regarding any budgetary expenditures which you feel should be reduced in the 2008 budget.
Several residents of the Winterset, Broadview Terrace, Stone Lake, and adjacent neighborhoods attended the recent meeting of the City Council Flood Committee meeting. At that meeting they had the opportunity to ask engineers and flood control planners from Fort Wayne as well as the Maumee Basin River Commission their questions regarding flooding and flood control projects in which they are interested. I’m a member of that committee and our goal is to work with all interested individuals and groups to prevent or at least minimize floods like those we experienced in the 1980s, 1990s, and also in 2003 and 2005. Fort Wayne’s flood fighting team is currently re-evaluating flood prevention all along the St. Mary’s River. Whatever is done in the future will depend on a combination of city and neighborhood efforts.
