AT THE MOVIES WITH HALEY ZIMMERMAN

If ever there was an inspiring underdog story, Superbad is… almost it. Not quite following in the path of its teen comedy predecessors, this movie takes a slightly less “fake” approach to the high school experience.

Seth and Evan are best friends who are at the twilight of their high school careers and looking for a little summer lovin’. After watching these two for a few minutes, you’ll notice their loveable clueless-ness when it comes to women, alcohol, the law, and pretty much everything they come into contact with.

The loveable duo goes through a series of comedic and slightly more than a little unlikely situations when they are given the task of buying some booze for a party. Armed with the most horrendous fake ID ever known to man, a close friend of the guys, Fogell, attempts to make the purchase in the guise of “McLovin, the 25-year-old organ donor,” setting off a chain reaction of hilarious events.

Seth is portrayed by relative newcomer Jonah Hill (Accepted, Knocked Up) in a brilliantly awkward fashion. While it is difficult at points to sympathize with his misogynism, his witticisms make up for the dramatic urge you may feel to slap him. Michael Cera plays the naïve Evan in an almost identical style to Cera’s character on the television series Arrested Development.

Superbad was written by high school friends Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who based the characters (loosely) on themselves. The dialogue in this movie is probably the most honest interpretation of how teenagers speak that I’ve seen to date. Possibly a little more vulgar than the day-to-day lives of most high school students, but that immaturity just reflects upon the fact that the characters are young kids and really just makes the movie all the more amusing.

Honestly, I didn’t go more than five minutes throughout this entire movie without laughing. Not just chuckling, we’re talking full out gut-busting laughter. However, this isn’t exactly your mother’s teen comedy. If you aren’t keen on naughty words or the occasional vulgar drawing, I recommend that you steer clear of this movie. However, if you’re looking for a raunchy laugh-fest similar to that of Knocked Up and 40-Year-Old Virgin, this is the movie for you. 3.5 stars.
