COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

At the time I’m writing this column the summer and along with it the summer fireworks season is well underway. As you will probably recall a new state law passed over a year ago opened the door for fireworks to be used 365 days a year with very little restriction. This was followed by a steady increase in fireworks use during the following year or so to the point that many people, including children, couldn’t sleep at night. This year the legislature passed a new state law allowing local government to limit fireworks use except for about 2 weeks each year—primarily around the 4th of July. City Council is currently on the verge of passing a local ordinance limiting the use of fireworks to the week of the 4th of July, New Years Eve, and also those days around Memorial Day and Labor Day. The newspapers will carry details of the new local law as soon as it is passed or you can call the office of City Clerk Sandy Kennedy for details. The Fort Wayne Police Department will enforce the new local fireworks restrictions as soon as they become official.

During the discussion regarding fireworks I learned that quite a few folks in the area are detonating “fireworks” that contain more than the legal amount of explosive material. Sometimes homemade “cannons” are used creating these illegal and dangerous blasts. If there are fireworks in your neighborhood that rattle the windows feel free to notify the FWPD so they can check out the situation. If it looks like illegal explosive devices are being used we’ll also ask the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to investigate since federal law applies in these situations.

Recently I’ve received some calls regarding resurfacing Shamrock Road which intersects with Winchester Road. Unfortunately, the neighborhoods in the area didn’t submit neighborhood CEDIT request forms which, among other factors, delayed Shamrock improvements. Some street resurfacing will be done this summer in the above noted area. For now I’m doing my best to get a major upgrade of Shamrock on schedule for the 2008 construction season.

I’ve also heard quite a bit about the bumpy railroad crossings on Brooklyn (South of Covington) and also near the intersection of Ideal and McArthur. I’ve discussed the situation with representatives of Norfolk Southern Railroad and they assure me that those 2 railroad crossings and also other crossings in the southwest part of the city will be upgraded during the coming months.

Give me a call with any problems regarding our city or any constructive suggestions as to how we can make Fort Wayne a better place to live.
