LOCAL BUSINESSES FEELING “The PINCH” AS WORK CONTINUES ON THE BRIDGE

The new bridge being built at Lower Huntington Road and Ardmore Avenue continues on schedule according to Rick Evan, the project manager. The pilings have all been driven and work continues on the deck. Completion is scheduled for early July.

Local businessmen are feeling the pinch, as traffic has been detoured around the Waynedale area. Chuck Hill from Hill’s Grocery said, “This construction project has not affected us as much as the last road and sewer project that went on for about a year.”

Scott Coe of Coe Heating and Air Conditioning, at 3300 Lower Huntington Road said that they have seen very little reduction in business. Their long time association with the area residents and the fact that they don’t get as much walk-in business as other retailers keeps them busy regardless of the traffic flow in front of their company.

Randy Doty of Sandpoint TV & Appliance, at 3113 Lower Huntington Road, mentioned that his business may be off as much as 25%. The bridge project detours traffic away from his store and people tend to go where it is most convenient.

On May 3rd, Cheryl Williams, Manager at Rich’s Restaurant explained that their lunch business Monday through Friday was down 50% and of course that impacts how much the waitress’s earn. Next door to Rich’s is the Crossroads Pantry/Marathon Station at 3411 Lower Huntington Road. Owners Brian and Donna Schindler have had to lay off 9 of their employees and cut the store hours in order to adjust to over a 50% drop in their business. Tria Wright, who is generally a stay-at-home mom, has come in to help the Schindler’s through the slow time.
