COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

There’s been quite a bit of discussion in the community regarding the proposed downtown Harrison Square project. The preliminary design would include a new hotel, new downtown retail and condominiums, and a new ballpark. If it becomes reality Harrison Square will be a huge boost to downtown Fort Wayne and will likely be a major catalyst for future development. The project would be financed by $60 million of new private investment, the use of CEDIT tax funds (no property tax funds would be used), and other funding sources. A public meeting regarding Harrison Square–including a Q & A session–will be held at the new Allen County Public Library at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14. Attend the session if possible and let me know your thoughts about Harrison Square.

The crime rate remains low in “The Waynedale News” area. This has been true for many years. Even though it is very safe to live in this area it still makes sense to keep your eyes open for any suspicious activity. For example, thieves in Fort Wayne have been breaking into empty homes and stealing copper pipe which has a high resale value. If you see any questionable activity in your neighborhood involving residences which are even temporarily vacant don’t hesitate to call 911 and report the problem. A quick response by the police might break up what appears to be a major criminal ring in Fort Wayne.

The ice rink at Headwaters Park is still open and can be used as long as the outside temperature remains under 45 degrees. This is a great family activity—consider taking your kids or grandkids ice skating at Headwaters during the next couple of weeks.

Be sure to call the pothole hotline at 427-1235 if you see any potholes. They will be filled within 24 hours.

Give me a call with your opinion regarding any issue of importance to the citizens of Fort Wayne.
