Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Recently I’ve had a few calls regarding possible delays in snow removal in the Waynedale area. Bluffton and Sandpoint Roads were mentioned specifically. I’ve communicated these concerns to the Street Department that handles snow removal. Let me know if major thoroughfares such as those mentioned above don’t get cleaned off quickly after a snowfall.

I’ve also heard quite a bit recently about the spread of gambling devices in the Waynedale area and around the city in general. As you probably know, there was a vigorous crackdown on businesses and organizations such as American Legions a few months ago regarding their use of Cherry Masters. This was done despite the fact that many military service organizations were giving much of their revenue from these devices to important public causes. Now this form of gambling is growing in storefronts and other locations and there is a major problem on the south side of the city. Police officers and the Prosecutor’s office are moving to shut down these operations when they are clearly operating outside the law. Hopefully it will eventually be possible for Cherry Masters (etc.) to legally be used in organizations such as the American Legion and VFW—that’s up to the state legislators and the governor.

New legislation is being introduced at the City Council level which would make it illegal to smoke in bars which are now excluded from the city smoking law. At the time of this writing I’m not sure of the details of this proposed change in city code. After more information is available I’m planning to spend lots of time listening to the views of owners of bars and similar businesses as well as to their smoking and non-smoking customers. I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts about this issue via phone call, note, or email.

Have a great holiday season! Don’t forget to consider doing some ice skating at the rink at Headwaters Park. Thanks for the opportunity to serve as your City Councilman.
