Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Congratulations to Beulah Stoker, Cheryl Connett, Renee Haugh, and all of the other volunteers for another successful Waynedale Community Picnic at Waynedale Park on Saturday, August 26th. Their great “party” was especially nice for the kids of this area with lots of free treats, prizes, etc. The committee is already working on next year’s event…give Beulah, Cheryl, or Renee a call if you’re willing to help out…they can always use the help of another volunteer!

In addition to the Waynedale Community Picnic there is also another positive development in Waynedale Park. The good news is that a water spray park is to be constructed in Waynedale Park. Construction will hopefully take place during the next construction season or possibly sooner. Young people love spray parks so this is a major step forward for the kids of the south side of Fort Wayne.

I’ve been involved in some of the ongoing discussions about the future of the Wizards’ baseball stadium. I’ve generally not been very sympathetic to the idea of building a new baseball stadium downtown. The current stadium seems to be in good condition and fans enjoy baseball games there and it’s close to downtown. On the other hand, there’s a new development that has me rethinking the entire issue. Apparently the investors, which currently own the Wizards’ baseball team have a personal investment interest in downtown Fort Wayne. They are considering building a new baseball park south of Grand Wayne Center with adjacent housing, shops, etc. It’s possible that another entity might purchase the current baseball stadium. At this point it makes lots of sense to me to work with private developers and to listen to any proposal they may have regarding a new baseball stadium, especially if most of the investment would potentially be private rather than public dollars.

City Council is going to be discussing the 2007 city budget during the most of September. All Council can do is to cut the proposed budget sent to us by the Mayor’s office…we cannot add any expenditures. Let me know if you have any opinions as to where City Council should CUT the budget.

Call me with any other constructive suggestions you have for our community.
