COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Since I’m writing this column on the eve of Memorial Day 2006, the first thought I should share with you is my strong support for our veterans and for all of those who gave their lives fighting for our nation. Despite what is a sometimes contentious debate over various matters of national importance, our country remains a beacon of hope for millions of individuals throughout the world. We must always honor our veterans on Memorial Day and every other day of the year.

As you may or may not be aware, City Council is continuing to work out the details of redistricting of Fort Wayne’s 6 City Council Districts. I still favor adding 2 more districts—an approach supported by 6 of 9 Council members—but Councilmen Crawford, Schmidt, and Didier oppose this measure and our State Senators and Representatives tell us they require at least 8 or 9 votes of our 9 member City Council to move this measure forward in the State Legislature. Currently individuals in Precinct 460 (which includes Winterset and Broadview Terrace and adjacent neighborhoods) are scheduled to become part of the 5th Council district after redistricting which will likely pass this summer or fall. I’ve asked City Council Legislative Assistant Molly McCray to contact neighborhood leaders in this area in an effort to determine whether residents feel strongly about whether they are in the 4th or 5th Council District in the future. Let me know your thoughts regarding redistricting.

Congratulations to Gerry Vandeveer and his wife for their hard work dedicated to making the Law Enforcement/Firefighters’ Memorial a reality. The Memorial, which is planned for a site at the intersection of Ewing and Wells Streets, will hopefully become a reality in the near future.

Contact me if you have any concerns or suggestions regarding matters affecting our city!
