SOUTHSIDE DEBATE TEAM QUALIFIES EIGHT
The South Side High School Speech and Debate Teams have qualified 8 students to compete in the Bluebonnet National Tournament (Dallas Texas June 18-23) sponsored by the National Forensic League. The students will be competing in Speech and Debate events hoping to win scholarships in amounts from $100 up to $10,000.
The students qualifying are: Troy Cummins, Kerri Jylland-Hade, Leah Heller, Tom Miller, Jessica Turner, Christine Walker, Katherine Walker and Emily Yates.
This is the largest number of qualifiers for the national tournament that the South Side Speech and Debate Teams have ever had. This is also the largest number of students qualifying from one high school in the Fort Wayne area this year.
This achievement is in addition to the Speech Team recently placing third for Division 2a in the State Speech Tournament held at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.
At the State competition, South Side had finalists in several events including two state champions, Tim Solon and Katherine Walker. The South Side
team advanced 26 students to that event after placing first at the Northeast District Sectional recently hosted by Snider High School.
The coach of the Speech Team is Elizabeth Sanchez-Franklin and the Debate team coach is Rachel Dickerhoof.
We parents are very proud of the achievements of all 80 plus members of both teams.
Congratulations to the teams on a very successful year!
