THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT
REMEMBER STEVE STONE
Steve Stone was a baseball player, who once pitched for the Cubs. He was a Cy Young award winner in 1980 with a 25-7 record for Baltimore and a 20-year Cubs announcer until October of 2004. He no doubt lost his job because of opinions aired on WGN AM.
“The truth of the situation is that an extremely talented bunch of guys want to look all directions except where they should really look and kind of make excuses for what happened.”
This was extremely offensive to Andy MacPhail (President), Jim Hendry (GM), and Dusty Baker (Manager). WGN and the Cubs are both owned by the same company, the Tribune Company. Stone’s statement was considered beyond constructive criticism. I thought we all had freedom of speech in this country?
Well, the Cubs changed that in 2005 and they now receive only good criticism from the broadcast booth.
Do any of you remember how the Cubs finished without any form of non-constructive criticism? I remember. That’s the Way I Saw It.
Steve Stone did broadcast for ESPN last summer.
