ANGIE STURM CONTINUES TO BOWL THEM OVER

Angie Sturm, a Senior at Bishop Luers High School won the 2004 Indiana State YABA Masters and Queens Tournament at Cooper’s Sports Bowl in Anderson, Indiana. She is the first person to win the tournament two years in a row. Angie received a $500 scholarship and an entry into the National Championship to be held at Indianapolis in 2005. She also qualified to enter the Midwest Tournament, which was held in August of this year.

I caught up with Angie on Tuesday afternoon, October 5, 2004. She was getting ready for practice with the Bishop Luers Bowling Team at Hillcrest Bowl. I asked her if she had chosen a college yet? She said, “I am looking at some different places. Wichita State is the most well known college for bowling, but it is 13 hours from here. There are some bowling NCAA sanctioned colleges around but very few.” Angie explained that her scholarship money goes into a “Smart Fund” which holds her money until she chooses a school. NCAA rules will not allow her to accept money and still keep her amateur status.

The Bishop Luers High School Bowling League starts in a couple of weeks and then runs for 10 weeks, at which time Angie will get another shot at post-season action.

Some of Angie’s accomplishments include: Her first 700 series in April of ’03 when she qualified for the Masters & Queens. This qualified her for the National Championship in Dallas, Texas. Team Captain for the Indiana-Kentucky All-Stars. She placed third in Division 1 at the Kegler Open Tournament. At Bishop Luers she finished the 2003-2004 season with a 210 average, had high games of 289 and 290, placed second in Sectionals, first in Regionals, first in Semi-State and fourth in State. Won the Indiana State YABA Pepsi-Cola Scratch Tournament. Bowled at the 2004 Junior Gold Bowling National Championship in Dallas, Texas. Was selected to participate in the first Midwest youth All-Stars Tournament, and was chosen as the Kathryn Hotzel Female Youth Bowler of the year for 2004. Angie has won eight scholarships.
