MARSH SUPERMARKETS INC. HAS LEARNED THAT IT HAS EARNED “OUTSTANDING RETAILER” AWARD

Marsh Supermarkets Inc. has learned that it has earned the “Outstanding Retailer” award from the Indiana State Excise Police Tobacco Retailer Inspection Program (TRIP) for reducing tobacco sales to minors in 2003.

The company was cited for improving from a 63% passing rate in “compliance checks” (illegal sales disruptions) — the previous year to a 92% rate for 2003 in the supermarket division and from a 66% passing rate in convenience store compliance checks to an 82% passing rate over the same time period. ‑This is the first time a retailer has made such significant progress and improvement in one year, according to the Indiana State Excise Police.

“We were so impressed with the Marsh performance,” said Major A.S. Anderson, Executive Officer of the Indiana State Excise Police, “that we have asked the company to produce for us a ‘Best Practices’ guide detailing the steps they took.‑ We can then share their perspectives with other retailers who continue to have problems in this area.”

“Marsh is very pleased to receive this award,” said Don E. Marsh, Chairman and CEO of Marsh Supermarkets.‑ “It recognizes a tremendous amount of hard work and diligence by our managers and employees in curbing illegal teen-age smoking.‑ We congratulate them and applaud their efforts.”
