COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

The Park Board recently made available the findings of the comprehensive study of the Fort Wayne park system. The public surveys which were conducted during the study showed that the citizens of Fort Wayne appreciate our parks and want a balanced emphasis on both open green space where we can take a stroll and relax and more organized activities such as water parks, swimming, tennis, winter sports, etc. One of the most strongly emphasized messages from citizens and from the consultants as well is that we need to move forward steadily to expand our greenway system. I agree!! City Council voted down a full time greenway coordinator position and Mr. Jack Stark is currently volunteering his time fulfilling those duties. Hopefully my fellow council members will get on board since the citizens have spoken and give our growing greenway system more support. I recently visited Maine and noticed the many bicycle lanes along city streets—if you think Fort Wayne should go that route give me a call or send me an email!

During the last few weeks some fellow City Council members and I have received several calls regarding Fort Wayne’s truck ordinance that has several “loopholes” and has not been enforced for several years. City Attorney Carol Smith and City Engineer Dave Ross and Chief Traffic Engineer Steve Davis as well as Deputy Police Chief Marty Bender are reviewing the current ordinance to see if it is enforceable. We need better tools to keep truckers out of residential areas when they have many truck routes they can use. On the other hand, laws designed to direct the flow of truck traffic should not interfere with commerce—those truckers and the companies they work for are important to the economic health of our city!

As you have probably heard, there is currently a tuberculosis (TB) outbreak in Fort Wayne. Most of the recent TB cases have occurred on the southeast side of Fort Wayne but it’s a countywide problem. Cough, fever, sweats, or unexplained weight loss occurring over more than a 2 week period should be reported to a health care provider or to the local TB Control Clinic at 449-7920. Anyone who is on preventative TB treatment or treatment for active TB should be sure to take the prescribed medications! Some additional funding on the way from the CDC should help us win this battle. Call the TB Clinic if you have questions or need more information.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and don’t forget the big Waynedale Community Picnic at Waynedale Park on Saturday, August 28, 2004! Keep your eyes on The Waynedale News and other local media for more information. Call me or send an email if you have any questions or constructive suggestions regarding Fort Wayne city government!
