THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

Plans Underway for Veteran’s Stand Down & Healthy Cities Health Fair

Wayne Township is proud to announce that the 14th annual Healthy Cities Health Fair & 8th Annual Veteran’s Stand Down will once again be held at our main office located at 320 East Superior Street. This event has grown substantially each and every year since finding a home in our building, and we are very thankful to our tremendous community partners whose efforts have resulted in an experience equivalent to the level of service that people have come to appreciate from the staff at Wayne Township. With the October 29th date set in place, plans are now building for an incredible day of service for those who are uninsured or underinsured.

This past year’s free health services included close to 400 flu shots, immunizations for pneumonia, tetanus/diphtheria, and Hepatitis A & B. Screenings for Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, Vision, Dental, Depression/Anxiety, PSA & Exam, PIXI Exam, DEXA Scan, TB, Sickle Cell, Pap Tests, HIV Tests, Syphilis, Hepatitis C, and Breast Exams & Mammograms.

The two screenings that I would like to mention individually are Foot Screenings and Lead Screenings. Foot problems are critical with the homeless and those of low income. Worn out or improperly fitting shoes cause a multitude of structural and joint problems and can lead to open sores and wounds that can result in amputation for the most serious cases. Lead screenings are critical to catch poisoning in young children. Children between six months and six years of age are very susceptible to lead poisoning that can lead to serious and costly health and behavioral problems. I am very proud of the fact that due to the success in testing at last year’s event, the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office now tests each and every home that we inspect for lead contamination. I believe that we are the first and only Township in the State to do so. If you are concerned about a possible lead contamination problem and would like to have your home tested, please contact the Allen County Board of Health at (260) 449-7504 or the Wayne Township Trustee Office at (260) 449-7000.

Many Veterans’ services will be offered in addition to all of these health services. V.A. Representatives will interview veterans on an individual basis to qualify them for all possible services and to address their concerns. We will assist with the registration with the Veteran’s Administration to access the V.A. Hospital for medication and other health services. The Allen County Veteran’s Service Officer will be available to provide information on all other programs that Veterans are eligible for as well. Veterans are always delighted with the new military-issued clothing. If Veterans are homeless, they will receive additional items through the Veteran’s Administration.

Since finalization of services for this year’s event are not yet completed, I would urge anyone from the community that has attended previously to pass on any suggestions on how we could serve you better. Please contact Operations Administrator Jason Hile at (260) 449-7000 with any questions or suggestions.
