THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT
WIZARDS OFFICIAL SCORERS, WHAT A PAIR
You are watching a Wizard’s baseball game and the scoreboard flashes E-6. Who made that decision? It certainly wasn’t made by the shortstop.
Two Mikes, Mike Jewell and Mike Maahs make all scoring determinations at the Wizards games. An official scorer is in many ways like an umpire. He must quickly call them like he sees them, and stick to them. Many players’ stats have a bearing on their calls and of course these call are subject to criticism.
Major League games have three scorers and they vote 2-1 or 3-0 on such resolve. A scorer must know the scoring rules very well and have plenty of experience around the ballpark.
For each of the games, official scorer activities start when they receive the batting order from the radio announcer after the Wizard’s manager and the visiting teams manager have authorized them. This batting order goes on Maahs’ scorebook and Jewell’s laptop computer. It is then routine making entries with comments being made along the way. As the complexion of the game changes this information is phoned to radio stations at certain intervals.
The Wizard’s come up with a terrific 5 run rally to win the game. Now Jewell goes into action. He updates his computer by adding stats of the game to the yearly stats. With Jewell’s direction the computer now spits out the updated yearly stats. The box score that you will see in the paper; the run down of the game batter by batter, and what the actual print of the scorebook looks like is completed in less than 15 minutes. Jewell then takes this information to the main office and makes several copies for distribution.
This two-man scoring team has an added feature in that Mike Maahs has plenty of radio and TV experience. He will, upon request, serve as the radio announcer. He has many times announced out of town games.
You see much versatility in this pair. Yes, an official scorer is very much official.
