THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

Educational Summer Experience!

When I was elected I took a serious look at all township programs, after an extensive audit I decided the youth program’s focus needed to be completely restructured. The existing program upon my arrival to the office spent over $100,000 per year of your tax dollars, focused on athletics, and provided no measurable results. Since education is one of the major components of self- sufficiency, I decided that any youth program must be based on two sound principles. It should focus on education, and it should not be at the expense of your tax dollars. By partnering with a local philanthropic organization and a local company with an accredited teaching curriculum, we were able to achieve our goal. Thanks to a generous grant from the Paul Clarke foundation our Computer Explores Camp will begin June the 14th and end with an awards banquet on August 6th. The program consists of four two-week camps for students from grade one to grade six. These camps focus on teaching high tech skills in a relaxed atmosphere. The campers will attend field trips that are appropriate for their particular camp one day per week. Here is a brief description of each camp.

Mission Possible – Tech Team

Join the COMPUTER EXPLORER Tech Team. We will attempt a Mars mission using Lego’s, solve a Cookie Dilemma, design a city for a mystery creature, and take part in the Gizmo Challenge. To help us meet our challenges, we will use cool software, and digital cameras. We will build models, create posters, and construct fantastic crafts. Success will be ours!

Life on Planet Earth

If you like to learn about plants, animals, and human beings, then this is the camp for you. We will use a digital microscope to investigate, digital cameras to record, and interesting software to learn about the life around us. We will grow plants, create exciting animal crafts and slideshows. We will discover interesting things about ourselves. We will learn about jobs such as paleontologist, nurse and veterinarian. Join us as we explore life on planet earth

Olympic Challenge

Learn about the Olympics (past and present) including the people and countries that participate in the Olympic games. We will use exciting software and digital cameras as we compete for the gold. Enter the Continental Challenge, the Time Travel Event, and take part in the Search the Planet Competition. Join us for a marathon of fun!

Hooray for the U.S.A.

Learn about and celebrate the USA! Explore our countries past, discover interesting places you may want to visit and learn about great men and women of yesterday and today. Discover interesting facts about our great state of Indiana. Use challenging software, digital cameras and a digital microscope. Create slide shows, books, pictures and great crafts. Join us as we learn about the USA and celebrate the Fourth of July!

Everyone today can benefit from learning computer skills, including children. We are excited to bring this day camp to our community that is designed to teach a variety of computer skills to youth in fun and exciting ways!

Technical and Educational Goals of the programs include:

• Learn to use the computer as a tool

• Gain experience with graphic software

• Learn to use digital cameras

• Learn word processing skills

• Create documents

• Journal daily

• Learn to follow directions and work together

This camp is funded completely by grants and donations and is offered to those students who fall at, or below, 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. The Paul Clarke Foundations requires a complete budget and measurable results after each funding cycle. This is the fifth year we have been able to offer the camp and we are proud to report that over 400 students have successfully completed the program. We believe this endeavor best serves the citizens of Wayne Township and directly reflects our mission statement of “guardian of the taxpayer and advocate of the poor”.
