SOUDER STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF PRESIDENT REAGAN

U.S. Rep. Mark Souder released the following statement upon learning of the passing of President Ronald Reagan.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the Reagan family. Especially Mrs. Reagan, who stood by the former president with such devotion during these last 10 years. While today the Gipper has been called home, he leaves behind a colossal legacy.

“The seeds of the Reagan Revolution began decades before Ronald Wilson Reagan was sworn into our nation’s highest office on January 20, 1981. From recent research, we know now that he was a prolific letter writer who painstakingly developed his core beliefs years before he was elected Governor of California by a margin of a million votes. And our current debates over the country’s foreign and domestic policy demonstrate that the Reagan Revolution has become the major force in American political thought-Democrat or Republican. We understate when we say that President Reagan fundamentally changed the course of the United States and the world.

“No mention of our 40th president could ignore the optimism that he inspired in us. President Reagan gave hope to millions behind the Iron Curtain, and the effect of the Reagan Doctrine was felt in Central America, Asia, and Africa. His challenge to the Soviet Union-his dogged pursuit of peace through strength-liberated millions who had been enslaved by the Evil Empire. On liberty Ronald Reagan just would not compromise.

“Known never to remove his jacket while in the Oval Office, his consummate dignity as President was to become starkly apparent in the 1990s. The grace for which President Reagan had become known culminated in the poignant letter he wrote in 1994, in which he announced to the world his affliction with Alzheimer’s disease and said goodbye.

“It is because of his extraordinary leadership that-while the sun has set on the life of this great American and we are saddened by his passing-it is indeed ‘morning in America.'”
