THIRD GENERATION HARDWARE BUSINESS CELEBRATES SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY
Umber’s Ace Hardware, a third generation, locally owned hardware business, will celebrate it’s 60th anniversary in May. Umber’s retail hardware stores have been serving Fort Wayne since 1944 when founders Lester and Bertha Umber opened for business.
The original store was located in Waynedale at the corner of Lower Huntington Road and Old Trail. By 1954, they had outgrown the location and built a new, larger store at the present site in Waynedale. The same year, Umber’s became an Ace Hardware affiliate.
Dwight Umber and his wife Marilyn became second generation owners of the hardware in 1965. Dwight had worked with his parents in the hardware business since it opened. Dwight opened two additional Umber’s Ace Hardware stores. Georgetown North, which opened in 1976 and Time Corners in 1987.
In 1997, Dwight’s son, Dave Umber and his wife Barbara, became the third generation owners of Umber’s. Dave opened the larger Covington Plaza location in 1998 to replace the Time Corners hardware.
Their 60th Anniversary Celebration will be May 2 – 8 and will include 60¢ product specials and registration for prize drawings. Vendor product demonstrations at all locations will be Saturday, May 8th from 10am – 2pm.
