IT’S THE SEUSSENTENNIAL
On Tuesday, March 2, 2004 Dr. Seuss-America’s most beloved children’s author-celebrated his 100th birthday, and so did the students at Indian Village Elementary.
During the month of February students at Indian Village were motivated to learn more about reading with a contest called “Magic in Reading”. All the bulletin boards were donned with reading ideas. Students read a total of 3600 books. In third grade, teachers and students celebrated with reading and a special birthday cake. Throughout the day on Tuesday adults were invited to read books to each grade level. Guest readers including local published authors Helen Frost and Claire Ewart were invited to many rooms to share their favorite stories. Administrator Mrs. Lillian Lowery, Mr. Geoff Paddock and other community leaders including Judge Charles Pratt were there to read, also.
Dick Stoner with his magic tricks, steel drums from Kekionga Middle School and awards were presented to the Essay Winners at an all-school assembly to end the birthday party celebration.
“A person’s a person, no matter how small,” Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. “Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted.” For four generations Dr. Seuss has charmed his way and in the process has helped millions of kids to read.
Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss, died in 1991 but he lives on in generations of children of all ages.
