COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

As you are probably aware there is an ongoing effort to allow the citizens of Fort Wayne and Allen County to study local government structure and eventually hold a referendum regarding a more efficient alternative to our present system that dates back well into the 1850’s. In the meantime I am determined to do everything I can to encourage cooperation between city and county government. A positive development along those lines is the current effort to develop a joint City-County development plan that will apply to all of Allen County. This plan would spell out joint goals for the City and County for the next 25 years in many areas such as housing, business development, zoning, recreation, parks, etc. Citizen input is being sought and if you are interested in serving on a task force working on that project be sure to let me know.

Recently I’ve received several calls regarding a business on Bluffton Road. Neighbors feel that patrons are disrupting life in the neighborhood by parking cars on private property, making too much noise, discarding trash in yards, etc. Lakewood Park Neighborhood Association is working hard on this problem and Fort Wayne Police Department officers are taking appropriate action. I’ll keep on top of this situation until it gets straightened out.

Foster Park is a beautiful park that has been an important part of our community for many decades. During recent years the park had become so busy on certain days that a traffic jam develops on the road into the park and park visitors are placed at risk. The police department has reviewed the situation and made some recommendations for improved parking and traffic control which actually creates more parking while increasing greenspace in the park. Nearby neighborhood associations have been notified and citizens will be given more details and asked for their constructive suggestions at the next Southwest Area Partnership meeting at 7pm on Wednesday, March 17th at Study Elementary School.

While I’m mentioning neighborhood associations I want to be sure to remind the neighborhood capital projects leaders to turn in their requests for CEDIT funded neighborhood capitol projects no later than March 15, 2004. If your association isn’t meeting regularly be sure to call your neighborhood officers and pass along your ideas regarding which streets, sidewalks etc. need to be upgraded during the coming year.

I’m receiving more and more e-mails and calls for the citizens in the Fourth District regarding a wide variety of matters. I check out every one and action is eventually taken. If you have any questions or further ideas regarding any issue about which you’ve called or e-mailed me in the past be sure to let me know!
